London Olympics 2012

For Inquiry Learning, we are learning about the importance of the London Olympics and lots of interesting facts on the different aspects of it.  The five Olympic Rings symbolizes the interlinking of the five continents.  Olympics began in Olympia, Greece in 766 BC.  Games are held every four years except in 1916, 1940 and 1944 during the two World Wars. The ancient Olympic Games lasted for 1170 years. The Olympic Rings were first used by Baron Pierre De Coubertin in 1914.  Baron Pierre De Coubertin was the founder of the first modern Olympic movement. In 1894, Baron De Coubertin wrote down five basic rules for the modern Olympic Games.  These are:
1.The Olympic games should be held every four years.
2. Events should include modern day sports.
3. Only adults should compete
4. There should be no money given as prizes. Instead, the first three place getters receive medals - gold for first, silver for second and bronze for third.
5. Each Olympic Games should be held in a different country.
